To become a fully licensed CPT-1 in California, students must complete both our Basic and Advanced Phlebotomy courses, pass the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) exam, and complete a 40-hour clinical externship.

Our curriculum strictly adheres to the regulations set by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) – Laboratory Field Services (LFS).

Basic Phlebotomy Module 1 (20 hours)
This module builds the foundational knowledge required to understand human anatomy and safe clinical practice.

  • Introduction to Phlebotomy & Healthcare: History of phlebotomy, professional ethics, legal issues, and the role of the technician in a laboratory setting.
  • Anatomy & Physiology: Focus on the circulatory system, major veins used for venipuncture, and the composition of blood.
  • Infection Control & Safety: OSHA regulations, universal precautions, personal protective equipment (PPE), and biohazard waste disposal.
  • Medical Terminology & Documentation: Standard medical abbreviations, laboratory requisitions, and proper patient identification protocols.
  • Basic Venipuncture Equipment: Understanding needles, evacuated tube systems (vacutainers), tourniquets, and the crucial Order of Draw to prevent cross-contamination.

Advanced Phlebotomy Module 2 (20 Hours)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Basic Phlebotomy.
This module moves into advanced clinical skills, special populations, and preparation for state/national exams.

  • Advanced Venipuncture Techniques: Butterfly needles, syringe draws, and handling difficult draws (collapsed veins, rolling veins).
  • Capillary Puncture (Skin Puncture): Finger sticks and heel sticks for infants and pediatric patients.
  • Specialized Collection Procedures: Blood cultures, arterial blood gas (ABG) handling, glucose tolerance testing (GTT), and therapeutic phlebotomy.
  • Specimen Processing & Handling: Centrifugation, preservation, transport requirements, and avoiding pre-analytical errors (like hemolysis or clotting).
  • Patient Special Populations: Tailoring techniques for pediatric, geriatric, and psychiatric patients.

Phlebotomy Externship
• 40 hours mandatory practicum
• Immunizations and other screening requirements not included in fee.

Upon successful completion of Basic and Advanced, students are eligible to sit for the national exam. After passing the exam and completing the externship, students are qualified to apply for State Licensing. Students must provide proof of high school graduation or equivalent for national certification and to the State of California to obtain a license.

Job opportunities for phlebotomists are expected to increase by about 6% between 2024 and 2034, which is faster than the overall average for all occupations.

Each year over that period, there are projected to be roughly 18,400 job openings. Many of these positions will arise not just from growth in the field, but from the need to replace workers who leave their roles—whether to switch careers or retire.
